Description
The North Martello Tower, built around 1808 to 1812, is located approximately 500 metres east of Bristol Hill on the site of the former HMS Ganges, a Royal Naval Training Establishment. This Martello Tower is constructed from vari-coloured brick and features rusticated stone dressings, with keystones above the doors and windows, some of which are blocked. It has a stone coping and has undergone repairs and refacing to its brickwork. The large circular tower now supports a black brick and metal water tower. It was originally built as part of the defensive system for the East and South Coasts during the Napoleonic War and is of the larger, elliptical East Coast type.
