Description

Martello Tower No. 23 is a Grade II listed structure built in 1806. This circular tower, which is slightly tapering and about 30 feet high, is constructed of brick and covered with cement render. The walls are reported to be 5½ to 6 feet thick. It features a projecting cement rendered stone coping that crowns a shallow domed roof.

The tower has two recessed glazing bar sash windows, one facing north and the other south, both positioned with their sills about 12 feet above the ground. There are small grilles located near the base. The entrance is a vertical door on the west side, with its cill approximately 10 feet up, framed by a proud architrave and a segmental head. Below the cill, there is a T-shaped recess that is also surrounded by the continuation of the door's architrave. At the time of the last survey, there were no external steps leading up to the door. A plaque is located above the doorway.

Although the interior was not inspected, it is said to contain a central brick pillar with vaulted arches, a magazine on the ground floor, and two rooms that served as quarters for the garrison above. This tower is one of a series constructed in 1806 as defensive gunposts against a potential Napoleonic invasion and is situated immediately behind the sea wall. Other nearby Martello Towers include No. 25 on Dymchurch Road and No. 24 on High Street.
