Description
No. 1 Market Place is a house with a late 18th-century facade, though it likely has an earlier core. The building is constructed of brick and features a roof made of black glazed pantiles. It stands three storeys tall and has five bays. The central entrance consists of a half-glazed door set in deep panelled reveals, flanked by two fluted Doric engaged columns that support an entablature with a metope frieze and a hood. The windows are sash style with glazing bars and are topped by gauged skewback arches. There is a moulded string course below the second floor, where the windows have been replaced with horned versions. The roof is hipped and has a clustered ridge stack located to the left of centre, along with a subsidiary stack on the east slope. At the rear, there is a brick cross wing with a gabled pantiled roof that has origins from the 17th century, featuring a north gable supported on kneelers. The internal gable-end stack to the north has been cut down and rebuilt.
