Description
No. 16 Market Place is a Grade II listed building in Wymondham, consisting of two shops that have been combined into one. The front range dates from the early 17th century and was likely rebuilt after a fire in 1616, while the rear wing is from the early 16th century. The structure is timber-framed with a colourwashed brick facade at the front and has a roof covered in corrugated black glazed tiles. It is two storeys high with a dormer attic.
The entrance features a glazed panel door on the left and a double-leaf early 19th-century door on the right, both separated by a sash window with glazing bars. To the far right, there is an early 19th-century three-light casement window, and on the first floor, there are two early 19th-century three-light casements. The building has a gabled roof with one gabled dormer. The two-storey rear wing is rendered and tarred, also featuring a gabled roof, but is virtually inaccessible from the outside.
Inside, there is a boxed bridging beam on the ground floor front, and in the west room, a knuckle brace can be found. A blocked door that once led to the rear is located above the attic steps. The rear wing contains two Regency timber wall arches and a 16th-century crenellated spine beam with double roll mouldings, along with chamfered bridging beams on the first floor. The roof is not accessible but is likely to hold historical significance.
