Description
The Cottage is a 17th-century house located on Fairland Street in Wymondham, with the front now used as offices and a rear wing for domestic purposes. The building features a timber frame with a whitewashed brick exterior and pantile roofs, and it stands two storeys tall. The facade was reconstructed in 1778 and has undergone further alterations since then.
There is a glazed panelled door to the right of the centre, framed by a plain timber doorcase. On either side of the door, there are two late 19th-century horned sash windows, each with one glazing bar. The first floor, which was originally jettied, is now rendered, whitewashed, and adorned with false timber studs, featuring four evenly spaced late 19th-century horned sash windows. The building has a gabled roof and a partial external gable-end stack on the east side.
At the rear, there is a large two-storeyed cross wing, which has a separate address of The Cottage, Brewery Lane. This section is also timber-framed with a whitewashed brick skin and a gabled roof. The west side of the rear wing includes a panelled door sheltered by a hood and two three-light late 18th-century casement windows, while other windows in this part of the building are from the 20th century.
Inside, the rear wing features a chamfered bridging beam with tongue stops. The roof and the front wing have not been inspected.
