Description

This building, located at 1 Queen Street and formerly known as Nos. 17 and 18 Market Place, is a shop with accommodation above and to the rear, now used entirely as offices. It dates from the early 17th century and was likely rebuilt shortly after the fire of 1616, with a rear wing added in the mid-17th century. The structure is timber-framed and features a 19th-century brick skin and details on the west return, along with machine tile roofs.

The facade is two storeys high with a dormer attic, rendered and whitewashed. It has a 19th-century double-fronted display window, a 20th-century central door with plate glass, and two 20th-century casements on the first floor. The gabled roof includes one flat-topped dormer. The west return to Queen Street has a brick ground floor with sham timber-framing above and one mid-19th-century three-light cross casement on each floor. The rear wing is timber-framed with a 19th-century brick ground floor, lit by two casements, and features timber studwork on the first floor along with two cross casements. The gabled roof has an external south gable-end stack.

Inside, the front range has boxed bridging beams on the ground floor and three sunk quadrant-moulded bridging beams on the first floor. The roof structure includes a clasped upper purlin roof with a lower tier of butt purlins. Despite the addition of the rear wing, the original roof line at the rear remains intact. The rear wing features a roll and hollow moulded spine beam on the ground floor, intact studwork on the first floor, and a roof of staggered butt purlins.
