Description
The Church of St. Mary is a parish church that dates back to the medieval period and was partly rebuilt after being struck by lightning in 1761. It is constructed from flint and colourwashed brick, topped with a thatched roof. The church features a continuous nave and chancel, with ruins that may be remnants of a medieval chapel to the north. The west wall is pebbledashed and includes an 18th-century Y-tracery window. A weatherboarded bell turret is situated over the first bay of the nave, complete with a boarded parapet and timber pinnacles with finials at the corners, as well as a spirelet. The doorway has three orders of brick reveals, and the south facade has three timber Y-tracery windows and is buttressed. To the north, there are remains of medieval flint walling, which includes a brick-dressed blind arch with a piscina. The north doorway retains remnants of imposts, while the north chancel wall is made of brick and features one Y-tracery window. The east window also has Y-tracery. Inside, there is a lobby and vestry in the first bay, and a west gallery supported by iron columns. The chancel arch is tripartite and rests on Tuscan columns with pointed arches. An octagonal font stands in the church, adorned with four lions at the base and a bowl decorated with flowers and angels.
