Description
Tivetshall St Margaret War Memorial is a First World War memorial, built around 1920, located in the churchyard of the Church of St Margaret in Tivetshall St Margaret. It stands prominently in the south-east corner of the churchyard on rising ground, providing a backdrop of rolling landscape. The memorial is approximately 2.5 meters tall and features a floriated cross supported by a four-sided pedestal with a deeply moulded cornice that includes carved motifs of crossed flags, all resting on a two-tiered base. The pedestal has inscriptions in incised lettering, and the entire structure is set on a foundation of slabs.
The inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ TIVETSHALL ST MARGARET/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS./ R.I.P."
