Description
Tivetshall St Mary War Memorial is a First World War memorial, erected around 1920, located in the churchyard of the ruined Church of St Mary on Gissing Road in Tivetshall St Mary, Norfolk. The memorial is prominently positioned in the churchyard, overlooking the fields across the road and near the remains of the church. It stands approximately 2.5 meters tall and features a floriated cross supported by a four-sided pedestal with a deeply moulded cornice that includes carved motifs, all resting on a two-tiered base. The pedestal has inscriptions in incised lettering, which are blacked for visibility. The inscription reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ TIVETSHALL ST MARY/ WHO LAID DOWN THEIR/ LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ GREATER LOVE HAS NO MAN/ THAN THIS, THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS./ R.I.P." The entire structure is set on a foundation of slabs.
