Description
The Church of St Mary in Hackford is a parish church that dates from the 12th, 14th, and 15th centuries. It features partially rendered flint with stone and some brick dressings, topped with plaintiled roofs. The structure includes a west tower, an aisleless nave with a south porch, and a chancel. The chancel, built in the 14th century, has a three-light east window with cusped Y-tracery and three similar two-light windows, along with one later two-light window that has a square head and mouchettes.
The north wall of the nave is from the early 12th century and contains a blocked round-headed doorway and rubble eastern quoins. There is a single 14th-century cusped Y-traceried window on the north side, while the south side has two two-light windows, one with a curvilinear design and the other in the Perpendicular style. The 15th-century west tower features diagonal buttresses, a three-light Perpendicular west window, and a projecting stair turret on the north side. It also has two-light cusped bell-openings and two-light sound holes.
The south porch has been heavily restored and includes a fine 15th-century doorway with a stoop inside. The chancel contains a 14th-century angle piscina and a 15th-century wave-moulded chancel arch. There are remains of rood-beam brackets and a rood stair, along with a tall 15th-century tower arch and a polygonal font. The church also features Victorian furnishings and scissor-braced roofs.
