Description
The Strike School, built in 1917, is a small single-storey rendered building located in Burston Church Green. It was constructed through public subscription to allow the village school teachers to continue educating local children after they were dismissed in 1914 for supporting a farm workers strike. The front wall is made of ashlar, featuring stones that have the names of the subscribers inscribed on them. The building has three bays, with a central doorway that has double doors and large casement windows on either side. There is a continuous moulded impost and lintels that form a frieze beneath the eaves, which is inscribed with "Burston 19 Strike 17 School." The roof is tiled with gabled ends, and there is a brick chimney stack located at the right-hand front corner. The school is included in the heritage register for its social historical interest.
