Description
Oldhouse Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 17th century, with later alterations. It features English bond brickwork, rendered at the front, and a timber-framed cross-wing on the left (south) side, faced in mid-19th century Flemish bond brick. The building has a gabled clay pantile roof, with moulded brick kneelers at the coped gables on the right and the stair tower. A 17th-century brick axial stack has moulded bases supporting four octagonal shafts. The layout is a three-unit lobby-entry plan, with a parlour in the cross-wing to the left of the stack and a stair turret at the rear.
The farmhouse is two storeys high with an attic and has a four-window range on the east front, with the gable facing to the left. The windows are mid to late 19th-century casements with glazing bars. There is a mid-20th-century porch with columns at the door, and similar casements are found at the rear. A late 20th-century conservatory is attached to the rear, along with a single-storey extension on the right.
Inside, the room to the left has a blocked fireplace and a 17th-century ovolo-moulded beam with bar stops. The central room, which was the former hall, has a chamfered beam with hollow-step stops and a blocked fireplace. The stair tower features a 17th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters and a moulded square newel with finials and panelling; some balusters have been moved to Waterfield Cottage. The stair tower retains its original roof with chamfered principals and butt purlins. The first floor has chamfered tie-beams and joists, while the roof is a four-bay clasped-purlin structure with windbraces, and the intermediate collars have birdmouth joints to the purlins. The roof in the cross-wing has chamfered cambered collars and chamfered principals.
