Description

Waterfield Cottage is a small house dating from the early 17th century. It features a rendered timber frame with some brick elements and a thatched roof. The building has a 2-cell lobby entrance type plan, with an additional cell added later in the 17th century. The facade has four bays and is one and a half stories high, with a 20th-century brick plinth. The windows include leaded casements, likely from the 18th century, with a two-light casement in the left-hand bay, and a four-light casement and a two-light casement to the right of a 20th-century lean-to porch. There are also two eyebrow dormers with Gothick leaded casements. A 17th-century brick axial stack is present, along with a tall rendered plinth at the rear. The ground floor features a four-light cavetto mullion window with a roll, and there is a 20th-century dormer window and thatched extension.

Inside, the timber frame is exposed, showcasing curved braces between the corner posts and wall plate. Cambered transverse beams support chamfered floor joists, and there are rebates for shutters in former openings on the ground and first floors of the bays next to the stack. A brick fireplace with a four-centred arch is found in the upper room, along with a cambered tie beam, curved wind braces, and clasped purlins. The interior also includes 17th-century turned balusters that were brought from Oldhouse Farmhouse.
