Description

This is a house, now divided into two dwellings. It largely dates from the late medieval period, with significant alterations in the late 17th and late 18th centuries. The original timber frame has been mostly replaced with a late 18th century facade of colourwashed brick and flint, topped with a gabled thatched roof. Brick ridge and end stacks are from the late 17th and 18th centuries, with the left gable end stack rebuilt in the mid-20th century. Originally an open-hall plan, the house was remodelled in the late 17th century with the insertion of a first floor and stacks, creating a three-unit plan. The house is one storey and attic in height, with a six-window front. Late 19th and early 20th century casement windows with glazing bars are set within segmental brick arches. A 20th century door is on the rear elevation and to the left gable. Inside, the room to the right has stop-chamfered beams and chamfered joists. The central room features a broach-stopped chamfered beam and is served by a back-to-back stack with bressummers to open fireplaces, along with a quarter-turn staircase with winders to the rear. A late 17th century bolection-moulded fireplace and an adjoining bolection-panelled door with strap hinges are found in the first-floor room to the right. The roof, substantially altered, is smoke-blackened over the three-bay central section, with a collar purlin to crown posts. Sawn timbers are visible in the closed trusses with passing braces. A queen-post truss to the left has mortices for axial bracing.
