Description

The Church of St Peter is a parish church with origins dating back to the 12th century, featuring a north nave wall from that period. The tower, built in the 15th century, was partially rebuilt in 1631, as noted by the brickwork at the bell stage. The church has undergone significant refurbishment in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is constructed from flint with stone and brick dressings, topped with plain-tiled roofs.

The layout includes a west tower, an aisleless nave, a south porch, and a chancel. The lower part of the tower showcases flushwork on diagonal buttresses, while the upper sections are adorned with brick dressings, Y-traceried bell-openings, parapets, and obelisk finials. The nave and chancel feature restored Decorated and Perpendicular window tracery. Inside, there is a 15th-century tower arch with double ogee mouldings and polygonal responds, alongside a Victorian chancel arch, screen, and fittings.

The nave roof, designed in the hammerbeam style, dates to 1904. The church also contains several notable floor slabs from the 17th and 18th centuries belonging to the Wodehouse family. A wall monument commemorates Dame Elizabeth Strutt, who died in 1651, featuring colored marble columns flanking her kneeling effigy. Additionally, fine fragments of stained glass from the 15th and 16th centuries fill two windows in the chancel.
