Description

17-21 Pottergate is a building of uncertain original use, now occupied by shops and a restaurant. It dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries, but was refronted in the 18th century, with further alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of red brick, with rendering over the facade of number 19. It has a pantile roof.

The building is two storeys high and has ten first-floor windows. A carriage entry is positioned to the left, with shops flanking it, each featuring a corner door. A continuous wide fascia extends over both shops, supported by fluted and banded pilasters and consoles. Four rusticated brick pilasters divide the right-hand bays into a 2:3:2 configuration, while the left-hand bays extend over the adjoining shopfront. A door is situated on the right-hand side, accompanied by attached Doric columns supporting a Renaissance architrave and pediment. Sash windows with glazing bars are found throughout. The windows are set within flat rubbed brick arches, which have keystones, and a moulded brick stringcourse runs along the front. The brick section culminates in a crenellated parapet. Six dormers, each with a flat roof, are present. A timber screen from the 16th century is trapped within the rear wall of number 19.
