Description
The Church Hall, located adjacent to the Church of St Catherine, was built between 1933 and 1935 by architects A.D.R. Caröe and A.P. Robinson. It is constructed of grey-purple and buff-brown brick, topped with a part hipped blue-grey pantile roof. The building features coped gables and blank parapets, showcasing a blend of Neo-Georgian and modern architectural styles that reflect the dignified lines of the church opposite, with the hall's long side set symmetrically to the west end of the church.
This single-storey hall includes two-storey side elements and has a five-window range of 12/9 sash windows with round-arched heads. On either side facing the church, there are entrance porches that resemble those of the church. Above the left porch is a blank range and a miniature fly tower for the stage, along with a single-storey range featuring narrow casement windows. The right end of the hall, which faces the road, has a similar porch with fluted reveals leading to ornamental double doors, narrow windows on either side, a triple window above, and a parapet that includes a panel inscribed 'ST. CATHERINE'S HALL'.
Inside, the hall features simple pilasters along the sides that support the ribs of a shallow canted ceiling. One end of the hall contains a stage with a moulded wooden front and a detailed proscenium arch, along with original doors on either side and at the opposite end. A curving staircase leads to the first floor, featuring uniquely shaped treads and a top embrasure with moulded stone coping on the parapet.
The Church Hall is significant for being little-altered, showcasing good detailing both externally and internally, and is carefully positioned on the axis of the notable church, forming an impressive group with it.
