Description
The Thorpe Hamlet War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, located prominently on the east side of St Matthew's Church. Constructed from stone and marble, the memorial was placed on a brick-edged platform when it was relocated.
The design features a wheel-head cross with ornate foliate lopes at each quarter, set on a tapering octagonal shaft that has a moulded collar and foot. This is positioned atop a four-sided plinth with chamfered corners and edges, resting on a three-tiered base. The plinth displays an inscription in incised and blacked lettering, which reads: 1914 - 1919/ YOU LIVE FOR ENGLAND/ WE FOR ENGLAND DIED// (NAMES)// (NAMES)// (NAMES)// IN THANKSGIVING FOR THESE AND ALL MEN AND WOMEN/ OF THORPE HAMLET WHO HAVE GIVEN THEIR LIVES/ IN THE SERVICE OF THEIR COUNTRY.
