Description

Nos. 13 to 17 on St. Giles Street is a Grade II* listed building that was originally used for an unknown purpose and is now occupied by shops. The structure features 15th-century and early 16th-century undercrofts, with the shops dating from the early 16th century and having 18th-century additions at the rear. The exterior has a rendered timber frame and a pantile roof, with two storeys and a first floor that jetties out. There are seven irregularly spaced 18th-century windows on the first floor, along with three 19th-century shopfronts, each featuring a side door. An off-centre carriage entry is present, and the first-floor sash windows have moulded timber surrounds, complemented by three gabled dormers.

The undercrofts are constructed of brick and consist of two bays arranged at right angles to the street line. They feature heavy, double-order diagonal ribs, a single cross-rib between the bays, and shallow side chambers. A 19th-century wall now divides the two bays. Barrel-vaulted passages connect the undercroft to a later chamber at the west end of the building, which has a pointed barrel-vault profile oriented at right angles to the street line. This chamber is one of the very few undercrofts that are contemporary with the structure above. The building is designated as Grade II* due to the significance of the undercrofts, which are part of an important group within the City walls.
