Description
No. 1 Guildhall Hill, which includes Nos. 1 and 3 Lower Goat Lane, is part of the Common Inn, also known as the Woolstaplers Hostel. This building dates back to the early 16th century, with some 19th-century alterations and an early 17th-century rear range along the yard. There is a 19th-century extension on Lower Goat Lane. The ground floor is constructed from flint-rubble and has a rendered timber frame, while the upper parts are brick, covered with plain tiles and pantiles.
The facade on Guildhall Hill features three storeys that are jettied at the first and second floors, with four bays. It has two 19th-century shopfronts, one with an off-centre door on the left and another at the extreme right, both adorned with attached fluted and banded Ionic columns and a triglyph frieze. Sash windows with glazing bars are present throughout, along with a heavy cornice and decorative ridge-tiles.
On the Lower Goat Lane facade, the building is three storeys high and features a brick covering over the timber frame. It also has four bays, plus a rendered timber-frame gable-end. The left-hand two bays contain a 19th-century shop front with finely carved consoles and a plain fascia. Sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches are consistent across this facade, with one blocked second-floor window and a fascia cornice. The early 17th-century rear range is two storeys high and jettied at the first floor, consisting of four bays, with a plain door at the extreme right-hand side. The ground floor has sash windows with glazing bars, while the first floor features casement windows.
