Description
The Church of St John the Baptist is a Grade I listed parish church, dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. It is constructed of flint with stone and brick dressings, featuring an ashlar faced clerestory. The church has a slate roof, with a lead roof on the aisles. It comprises a west tower, nave, and chancel in one, along with north and south aisles and porches. A 19th-century vestry is also present.
The tower is four stages high and has diagonal buttresses. There is a north to south passage beneath the tower, which features three-order two-centre arches and tierceron vaulting. Above, there is a large blocked brick west arch with a three-light perpendicular window. The tower has 20th-century belfry windows and a crenellated parapet with corner pinnacles that have statues.
The nave and chancel are four bays long, with three three-light perpendicular windows in the south aisle. The south porch is two storeys high and has a damaged vault inside, incorporated into the west end of the aisle. There is a priest's door at the east end of the aisle and eight tall three-light clerestory windows. The large 15th-century five-light decorated east window is a notable feature, as is the north aisle's east window, which has cusped intersecting tracery. The two-storeyed north porch is now used as a chapel and has an outer doorway with a shield band in the outer order and attached shafts, along with a central statue niche and a three-light square-headed window above.
