Description

No. 35 St. Giles Street is a former house that has been converted into a shop and offices. The building features a 15th-century undercroft. The street-facing section dates from the late 16th or early 17th century and was remodeled and raised in the 18th century. There is also a parallel rear range from the late 18th century and a long block at right angles. The structure is made of red brick with a black pantile roof and has three storeys plus a cellar at the rear. The street range has four bays and boasts a fine 19th-century shopfront with an off-centre door that reflects the 18th-century entry arrangement. The first floor has sash windows with glazing bars and rubbed brick flat arches, while the second floor features bottom-hung casements with glazing bars. A block modillion cornice adds to the architectural detail. Inside, there is an interesting arrangement with an open-well stair on the right-hand side at the rear, featuring turned balusters and carved brackets. This stair leads to a first-floor back room that showcases exquisite 18th-century panelling, along with carved mantel and plaster ceiling. The undercroft is constructed of brick and has two irregular bays that run at right angles to the street line. It features single-order diagonal ribs with additional radiating ribs to accommodate door and window openings, as well as wall arches and lighting niches in the south bay. The building is listed as Grade II* due to the significance of the undercroft, which is part of an important group within the City Walls, and for its 18th-century carving and plasterwork.
