Description
The Church of St Mary the Less is a Grade I listed building that was originally a parish church and is now used as a store. It dates from the 13th, 14th, and 15th centuries and is constructed of flint with stone and brick dressings. The roof is not visible. The church features a west tower, nave, and chancel, along with a south porch. It has been built up against on the east, south, and west sides.
The tower is three stages high and has diagonal buttresses on the west face, with a remade straight buttress on the north-east corner. The top stage has blocked two-centre window openings and a flat parapet. The nave consists of three bays, featuring two re-faced late 13th-century windows with Y-tracery in the north wall. There is a two-light square window and a door with a fanlight on the west side, while the chancel has two bays and one 19th-century two-light square-headed window. A doorway with a semi-circular arch is present, with the year 1637 carved on the door, indicating when the church was taken over by the French Protestants.
The south porch is two storeys high, with attached shafts and a two-centre arch, and it features a weathered statue niche above the door.
