Description
The Edith Cavell Memorial is a sculpture created by Henry Pegram, erected in 1918 and relocated to its current position in 1993. It features a bronze bust of Edith Cavell, set on a stone pyramidal plinth, which stands on a square base. The memorial is located on the south-east side of Erpingham Gate, facing south-west across Tombland.
The bust depicts Cavell in her nurse's uniform, while the plinth includes a life-size carving of a soldier in high relief. The soldier's right arm reaches up to present a wreath to Cavell, symbolizing the men she protected and the sacrifice she made, while his left arm is positioned behind him, holding the barrel of his rifle. The west face of the base is inscribed with the words 'EDITH CAVELL NURSE / PATRIOT AND MARTYR', and the rear face bears the inscription 'ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION / J.G. GORDON MUNN ESQ MD FRSE / LORD MAYOR 1914 - 1915'. The right side of the plinth and the base of the bust are inscribed with 'HENRY PEGRAM SC 1918'.
Additionally, a stone kerb walling that forms a raised flower bed on three sides of the memorial was laid out in 2015, but this feature is not included in the listing.
