Description

Erpingham Gate is a Grade I listed gateway located in The Close, dating back to 1420, with restorations carried out in the 19th and 20th centuries. The structure is made of flint and stone and features a large two-centre arch that is adorned with three orders of mouldings and two bands of figures on the side facing Tombland. Flanking the arch are two carved panelled polygonal buttresses that rise to the height of the spandrel, which also display shields. At the top, there is a gable with a central statue niche and kneeler statues that cap the buttresses, along with a cross at the apex. The gate is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
