Description

91 King Street is a house with a 15th-century undercroft, built in 1811, as indicated by the incised brickwork. The property also contains fragmentary remains from the late 15th century, 16th century, and 18th century. It features red brick construction with a pantile roof and flint rubble walls at the rear and sides. The house is two storeys high and has three bays. The central door is topped by a semi-circular rubbed brick arch with simple timber jambs. To the right, there is a carriage entry with a four-centre rubbed brick arch. The windows are sash style with glazing bars and have rubbed brick flat arches, with a blind window located above the door. A simple box cornice adorns the top of the building.

Inside, the rear room has a cross-beam with double-ogee moulding, which may date back to the time of the undercroft, along with a blocked 16th-century window in the north wall. The undercroft itself is made of brick and consists of two bays with three transverse ribs that spring from wall piers, featuring a shallow four-centre profile. There is slight barrel-vault webbing between the ribs, and it includes three side chambers and two end chambers, with remnants of internal and external stair entrances. The undercroft is oriented at right angles to and set back from the street line. This building is listed as Grade II* due to its significant undercroft, which is part of an important group within the City Walls.
