Description
1 and 3 Timberhill is a Grade II* listed former house and undercroft, now serving as a shop and printing works, with parts currently empty. The house dates from the 17th century and was refaced and altered in the early 19th century. It features red brick construction, rendered on the Timberhill facade, and has three bays. The central door is framed with a reeded surround and pediment, while sash windows are topped with flat rubbed brick arches. The Timberhill facade includes a plain shopfront with a corner door and an end passage entry, as well as sash windows with simple surrounds and casement windows on the second floor. The building has a box cornice and a hipped roof.
The undercroft, dating from the 15th century, is made of brick and consists of four and a half bays with side chambers beneath a 16th and 17th-century corner block, which turns at the east end to align with the Timberhill street line. It features single order chamfered ribs in a quadripartite design for the full bays and a pointed barrel vault profile for the west half bay. The entry stairs, with timber treads, run parallel to the south wall and lead over a partially blocked side chamber. The western side chamber contains 17th-century brickwork that is contemporary with the rear range. The north side chamber, now obscured by 19th-century stairs, has remains of the springing of an arch and a plastered chamfer over the stairs. The western half-bay has a blocked opening, which may have provided a direct exit to Orford Hill, making the undercroft unique among domestic examples in Norwich.
