Description

15 Bridge Street is a timber-framed building with origins in the 16th century, significantly altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber framed with a rendered exterior and painted brick to the rear; the ground floor has a timber shop front. It occupies a corner plot and has a roughly rectangular footprint, with its principal elevation facing south towards Underhill Street and a western elevation along Cartway.

The building is two bays wide and two storeys high, with an attic. The main south elevation has a mid-19th-century shop front on the ground floor, featuring moulded cornicing and four square pilasters. A central doorway has a half-glazed door and fan light, with two-over-two windows on either side. Above the shop front is a central, canted oriel window, and two gabled attic dormers.

The west elevation has a gable with cusped bargeboards and a modern window. The northern section of the building is stepped slightly and abuts a north-facing gable, with two attic dormers and a brick stack within the roof slope. The four first-floor windows are modern replacements. A shallow, lean-to addition runs along the ground floor of the west elevation; it is tiled to the north and has a flat roof to the south, and is canted on the southwest corner. A passageway runs east to west through the building, connecting to 45 Cartway, and features chamfered beams, vertical studwork infilled with painted brick. The rear, east side of the building is faced in painted brick and features a pitched roof extension and an external staircase.

The ground floor interior features chamfered ceiling beams and timber supporting posts. A modern staircase and bar have been inserted. In the southwest corner is a diagonal dragon beam approximately 4 metres long. A jowel post with a bracket supporting a projecting joist is located near the bar. A decorative cast metal supporting post is also present in the north section of the ground floor. On the first floor, jowel posts are visible, and the beams are chamfered and stopped. Walls feature close studding, box framing, and some diagonal bracing to the south wall.
