48, Cartway

No. 48 Cartway is a house that has been converted into a restaurant. It dates back to around 1600, with an extension added in the 18th century and alterations made in the 19th century. The building features a timber-framed structure with rendered panels and a painted brick rear wing. It has a clay plain tile roof with gabled ends and a brick axial stack at the rear.

The front range has a rectangular plan, while the 18th-century brick rear wing creates a T-shaped layout. The building stands two storeys high with an attic. The front wall's framing includes storey-posts, heavy rails, and studding. On the ground floor, there is a 4-light shop window with glazing bars, doorways on both the left and right, and a fascia above with a cornice and consoles. The first floor has two 20th-century casement windows and two gabled dormers, each with casements that also have glazing bars. The large rear wing is made of painted brick and has a gable end.

Inside, the building features exposed timber-framing and chamfered ceiling beams.
