Description
The Church of St John and All Saints is a parish church located on Harwood Road in Lakenham. It dates back to the 13th century, with a 15th-century tower. The south aisle was added in 1825, and the chancel was rebuilt in 1864 by J. Brown. The building is constructed of flint rubble with stone dressings, mostly rendered, while the south aisle is made of red brick and features a pantiled roof. The nave and chancel are combined, and there is a west tower, a south aisle, and a north vestry.
Architectural details include two 2-light north nave windows with 4-centred heads, an east window with intersecting tracery, and three 3-light windows with flat heads and drip moulds in the south aisle. The tower is unbuttressed and consists of three stages, featuring 2-light belfry windows, gargoyles, and a crenellated parapet.
Inside, accessed through the south aisle, there is a 19th-century wooden south arcade and a plank north door leading to the later vestry. The roof is arch-braced with roll mouldings on the purlins and principal rafters, and there is a moulded wall plate below rendered ashlar posts. Notable interior features include a 14th-century octagonal font and a monument to William Crowe, who died in 1779, located on the north chancel wall. The gable of the north vestry has a tablet inscribed with HJ/TK/1824.
