Description
49 St Benedict's Street is a former inn that has been converted into a shop with a flat above. The building dates from the early 16th and 17th centuries, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The ground floor is rendered, while the first floor features a timber frame with 19th-century timber-frame cladding. The rear walls are made of flint rubble, and the roof is covered with pantiles. The building has a T-shaped plan, with the basement and first floor extending over and beneath the adjacent properties at Nos. 45 and 47.
The central entrance door is flanked by picture windows, and there are yard entries on both the left and right sides. The left-hand side has a moulded timber surround. On the first floor, there are two 19th-century mullion and transom windows. The roof structure includes a crude crown-post design. The early 17th-century rear range features a long frieze window at the first floor and re-used 16th-century windows.
