Description
The Norwich Arts Centre, located at No. 51 on St. Benedict's Street, is a former parish church that has been repurposed as an arts centre. It dates back to the 14th and 15th centuries and is constructed of flint with stone and brick dressings, topped with a lead roof. The west tower was removed in 1881. The building features a nave and chancel combined, with north and south aisles, and a rood turret located against the north aisle. To the east and north of the church, there is a large Edwardian vestry and hall. The west gable has a small bell-turret and a four-light window. The nave and chancel consist of four bays with two-light decorated windows, while the clerestory windows are also two-light with flat arches and decorated tracery. The east window is a five-light design with a four-centre arch and decorated tracery.
Inside, the north aisle is supported by hollow chamfered octagonal brick piers, while the south aisle piers have been remade in a classical cruciform section with semi-circular arches. The interior boasts a fine queen-post roof with arch braces that spring from wall-posts, which are supported on angel corbels, and features carved bosses at both purlin and ridge levels.
