Description
The Church of St George is a parish church dating from the 15th and 16th centuries, constructed of flint with stone dressings and featuring ashlar facing on the clerestory. It has lead roofs and includes a west tower, nave, chancel, north and south aisles, a chancel chapel, and a south porch. The tower, built in 1458, has three stages and is supported by diagonal buttresses. It features a west door with a three-light window above, square sound holes with ornate tracery, and tall three-light belfry windows with four-centre arches. The crenellated parapet includes flushwork and shields set in lozenges. There is a two-storeyed porch attached to the tower. The nave consists of three bays and has four three-light perpendicular windows in the south aisle dating from around 1510, along with six three-light perpendicular clerestory windows with four-centre arches. The chancel is two bays long, with a single bay south chapel and a two-bay north chapel, both extending from the aisles.
Inside, there is a west gallery supported by Tuscan columns, and a notable tomb-chest of terra cotta dedicated to Robert Jannys from 1534. The nave roof is impressive, featuring cambered tie-beams on arched braces, with longitudinal arched braces above the windows that spring from wall-posts.
