Kitchen Garden Walls At Thornfield Residential Home For The Elderly

The kitchen garden walls at Thornfield Residential Home for the Elderly date from 1903 to 1905 and are part of the Home Place estate designed by E.S. Prior. The walls enclose a kitchen garden measuring approximately 90 meters by 20 meters and are constructed of uncoursed flint, standing about 3.1 meters high, with seven courses of double tiles. The north-west and south-east walls are canted. There are opposing central entrances, with the entrances to the south-west and north-west featuring square carstone piers that are around 3.4 meters high. A small doorway under a carstone segmental arch is located on the north-east side, leading to a semi-circular flight of steps that ascend to a loggia and terrace. The walls are attached to the coach house and the east wing of the main house.
