Description
The Old Rectory, dated 1849, is a house located in Stody, Hunworth. It features brick construction in Flemish bond with brick stacks and tile roofs. The building has two and three storeys with scattered windows. The main family block includes two projecting bays on the south and garden fronts, while the service wing is modest in style, extending to the north and ending in a gable-facing cross wing that has a single-storey outbuilding on its north face. To the north, there is a gable-facing stable block designed in a matching style, connected to the service wing by walls and a gateway. The overall design is asymmetrical and picturesque, reflecting the Tudor Revival style.
The entrance porch is particularly notable, featuring pinnacles and a carved stone aedicule above the diaphragm arch. The projecting bays have stepped and pinnacled gables, and the numerous stacks are topped with clustered, ornamented shafts. The architectural details draw inspiration from the local late medieval building tradition, which is echoed in several nearby authentic medieval structures. The doors and one leaded casement light at the peak of the gable on the east front are of original design.
Inside, there is a spacious stair hall that rises to the first floor, featuring a staircase of original design. Most ground floor rooms have carved stone fireplaces and doorcases with Gothic-styled mouldings. A flat panelled ceiling in the drawing room facing the south garden is of special note.
