Description
The Church of St Mary Magdalene is a parish church located in Warham, built with flint and stone dressings and featuring a slated roof. The structure includes a west tower, south porch, nave with clerestory, and chancel, along with a brick north chancel chapel. The north doorway is a Norman design, while the tower is decorated with Perpendicular bell openings and battlements, although there are blocked 12th-century openings. The nave and chancel date back to the 14th century, and there is a priest's door set into the south buttress of the chancel, designed as a gabled porch.
The windows include two three-light Perpendicular windows on the south side of the nave, one three-light Perpendicular window on the north side, a two-light window with 'Y' tracery and a three-light Perpendicular window on the south side of the chancel, and a three-light Perpendicular east window. The nave features an elliptical plaster ceiling with three roundels and a moulded cornice, dating from the late 18th century. Inside, there are box pews and wall panelling from the 18th century, along with a three-decker pulpit and a sounding board. The chancel has closely set late 18th-century altar rails. The church contains much re-set glass, including 15th-century English glass in the nave and German and Flemish Renaissance glass elsewhere. There is also an 18th-century font with a simple stem and a diminutive bowl.
In the north chancel chapel, there is the Turner mausoleum made of brick, featuring 'Y' tracery windows, 18th-century double doors with iron grills leading from the chancel, black ledger slabs on the floor, and hatchments.
