Description
Williamsons Furniture Store and former Prison is a building constructed in 1787 on the site of the Old Leprosy Hospital. It was enlarged in 1822 and became the County House of Correction. The prison is said to have had 53 cells, several day rooms, exercising yards, an infirmary, and four treadmills for grinding corn. The 1822 mill on the west side is made of red brick and features a hipped black-glazed pantile roof, brick dentil eaves, and stands three storeys high with a basement. It has five window bays with small windows that have rubbed brick arches and stone cills. The wide central entrance on the ground floor has a slight rubbed brick arch, with another doorway to the right. The east wing, which contains the cells, is lower in height and is also made of red brick, featuring brick dentil eaves and a pantile roof with a hipped end. This wing has a studded prison door with a barred viewing hole.
