Description

Farmbuilding range, dating from the 17th century and late 18th century, with additions from the mid-19th century. Constructed of red brick with some flintwork, and featuring pantile and Roman tile roofs, the range forms a U-plan. The barn at the southern end of the eastern arm, dating to the 17th century, is built of brick and flint, with some tumbled-in brickwork. It has a door on the western gable and blocked openings within a later lean-to extension, along with a later window in the eastern gable. The interior of this barn has a roof structure with collars, two tiers of butt purlins, the upper tier with windbraces, and coupled rafters.

To the north, a lower range likely dating to the late 18th century, includes loose boxes, a root store, and a cart shed. This extends westwards as the base of the U-plan, possibly incorporating a cowshed range with stable doors. The western arm features a taller barn from the mid-19th century, with a double door to the west and a smaller door facing the yard. Its interior has a king-post roof with two tiers of purlins.

To the south, the U-plan is completed by a mid-19th century stud unit, comprising a tack room, foaling box, a room for a stud groom with a fireplace, a range and chimney, and a set of stables with timber and wrought-iron partitions. The walls are of random brick and flint, blank towards the yard, but with two sets of double doors, one single door and four two-light casements facing west. The interior of the stables features timber and wrought-iron partitions.

The farmbuilding range forms a group with Culpits Farmhouse, and illustrates changes in farming practices from the 17th to the 19th centuries, when the farm appears to have become a specialist stud facility.
