Description
Phillipo's Farm Barn is a farm barn dated 1818, built by J.E. Phillipo. It is constructed of flint with brick dressings, and the roof has been replaced with asbestos sheets. The barn features a three-stead layout with a central cart entrance and a 20th-century lean-to on the east side. There are two ventilation slits, and the gables are adorned with inscribed stone finials. The south gable has the inscription "game law theology" on the upright and "Bigotry" on the plinth, along with a lengthy poem that critiques the game laws, dated 1847. The north gable bears the inscription "game law justice" and "Tyranny." Another inscription commemorates the imprisonment of the estate's owner for taking and eating his own game out of season, highlighting his opposition to the game laws and tithes. This barn serves as a monumental protest by William Skinner Phillipo, who was a noted free-thinker and critic of these laws.
