Description
The model farm buildings, constructed between 1852 and 1853 by G A Dean, form a complex arranged around three sides of a courtyard that opens to the north. The buildings are made of gault brick with limestone dressings and feature slate roofs. They are primarily single-storey, with two-storey corner and central blocks. The central steaming house is located in the south range and consists of three bays, with the central bay slightly advanced and topped with a pediment.
The design includes large door openings with semi-circular arched heads and key stones, moulded string courses, and rusticated brick quoins. The eaves and verges are adorned with modillion detailing, and there is a central lantern vent with a hipped lead roof, which is topped by an iron weather vane and features iron grilles on each face. The corner blocks have hipped slate roofs with carved and turned timber finials.
The one-storey ranges have brick dentil eaves courses and openings with gauged brick arches. The eastern range, which includes horse boxes and stalls, features a central pedimented porch, two chimney stacks, and two louvred vents along the ridge line. These vents have lead-covered pyramidal roofs supported on console brackets. The courtyard also contains a central block of pig and calf sheds, with yards and shelters located to the east and west.
