Description

Melton Constable Hall's north wing and part of the south-west wing of the stable court were built in 1810. The structure is made of white gault brick, with some red brick and cemented dressings, and features slated roofs. The north wing has a west front that is two storeys high with attics. It has a one three-one-three-one bay arrangement of ground and first floor sashes with glazing bars, all under flat rubbed brick arches. There is an off-centre door with margin light sashes, also under rubbed brick arches, and a stone Tuscan Doric door architrave with pilasters and a triangular pediment. The door itself is a six-panelled raised and fielded design. The ground floor has a plinth and the first floor features a platband, pilasters, and a moulded wooden eaves cornice. At the rear, a single-storey wing with an attached wall and gate pier forms half of the south wing of the stable court. The mixed character of the brickwork and the unusual rhythm of the windows suggest that the north wing incorporates part of the service range depicted in Kip and Knyff's aerial perspective of Melton Constable.
