Description

Melton Constable Hall Stable Court consists of the west and north wings, with origins dating from the late 17th century and a later addition in 1810. The building is constructed of red brick, gault brick, and cement render, featuring a slated and copper roof. The west front has seven bays and a central entrance arch topped with a cupola. It is a single storey with attics, and the entrance arch contains boarded double doors with six panels each. The entrance is flanked by red brick piers and features stone imposts and a keystone, along with a cemented tympanum. Above the entrance is a stone platband with two oculus windows, each adorned with four stone keystones. The building has a deep wooden eaves cornice and a hipped roof that supports a central wooden cupola with copper flushings. The cupola's plinth section features two clocks and two sundials set under segmental and triangular headed pediments, along with an arched bellcote that has four arched sides topped with a copper roof and weather vane.

The wings on either side of the entrance are three bays wide, with brick piers and arches filled with cement rendered walls that have 20th-century sash windows. The wings also feature a brick modillion cornice and dormer sashes with two segmental and one triangular headed design on each side. The rear of the building includes cast iron columns that support the first floor. The north wing, which forms part of the stable court, is made of gault brick with a slated roof and contains sash windows and panelled stable and carriage doors. Additionally, there is a further single storey red brick courtyard to the north, which has a brick pier with an urn gate pier at the northeast entrance. The north wall of the north wing and the east gable wall of the same range have rusticated openings, suggesting they may have been re-used from a barn depicted in Kip and Knyff's aerial perspective of Melton Constable.
