MELTON CONSTABLE MELTON CONSTABLE PARK The Bath House.

Former bath house, now a cottage. Probably 1764, by Lancelot Brown for Sir Edward Astley. Stuccoed brick, slated roofs. Central 3 storey 3 sided bowed centre, flanking 2-storey single bays, 2 bay returns. Castellated Gothick. Ground floor and first floor 5 Gothick switch tracery arched headed sash windows with glazing bars. Returns with 2 ground and first floor switch tracery sashes. Stucco quoins and battlements. Blank windows with painted glazing bars to second floor of central bow with conical slated roof with weather vane behind. Battlemented parapet, central sun-dial. Sun-dial first floor of south return. 2 storey 2-bay brick addition to south, red brick but with switch tracery Gothick sashes and brick battlements. Brick outshut rear. Ground floor former bathroom with wooden cornice and 6 panelled doors with architraves. Perhaps by "Capability" Brown c.1764-1709 : see Dorothy Stroud, Capability Brown (2nd ed 1975) pp112, 233.
