Description
The Bath House is a former bath house that has been converted into a cottage, likely built in 1764 by Lancelot Brown for Sir Edward Astley. The structure is made of stuccoed brick and features slated roofs. It has a central three-storey, three-sided bowed section, flanked by two-storey single bays and two bay returns. The design is in the Castellated Gothick style.
On the ground and first floors, there are five Gothick switch tracery arched-headed sash windows with glazing bars. The returns have two ground and first floor switch tracery sashes. The building includes stucco quoins and battlements, with blank windows featuring painted glazing bars on the second floor of the central bow, which is topped with a conical slated roof and a weather vane. A battlemented parapet and a central sun-dial are also present, with an additional sun-dial located on the first floor of the south return.
To the south, there is a two-storey, two-bay brick addition made of red brick, which has switch tracery Gothick sashes and brick battlements. The rear of the building has a brick outshut. Inside, the former bathroom on the ground floor features a wooden cornice and six-panelled doors with architraves. This building is associated with "Capability" Brown, who was active from around 1764 to 1709, as noted in Dorothy Stroud's book on Brown.
