Description

The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul in Cromer dates from the 15th century and was restored in the late 19th century, with the chancel rebuilt by Sir Arthur Blomfield between 1887 and 1889. The church is constructed from flint, including Quaternary Flint and partly knapped flint, with Bath stone and Lincolnshire Limestone dressings, and has slated roofs. It features a tall nave with six perpendicular clerestory windows, and a 19th-century chancel. The north and south aisles have seven large perpendicular traceried windows and buttresses with niches between them.

There are two storeyed porches on the north and south sides, with the north porch being vaulted. Both porches have flushwork-panelled stair turrets and flushwork panelling on their side walls. The west tower is very tall at 160 feet, consisting of four stages with pinnacles and ornate battlements, tall two-light bell-openings on each side, set back buttresses, and a five-light west window.

The west porch is made of knapped flint and has niches on either side of the entrance, battlements, and a vaulted inner doorway with elaborate detailing. Inside, the church has a lofty interior featuring a very tall tower arch, arcades, and a chancel arch. The stained glass in the south aisle is by Morris, dating from around 1874. There is a traceried south door and a brass from 1518 set into the chancel wall.

The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, along with its churchyard boundary wall, war memorial, and monument to J H Earle, form a cohesive group.
