Description

The Saracen's Head Public House is a public house built around 1830. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a low pitched hipped roof made of red clay pantiles, which has very deep eaves and lead roll hips and ridge. The building has two brick axial stacks.

The layout is a rectangular double depth plan with two main front rooms and a central entrance hall that includes a staircase at the back. The structure has two storeys and an attic, presenting a symmetrical three-window front on the southwest side. This façade includes a plat band at the first floor and under the eaves, with window openings that have flat brick arches. The first floor has 20th-century casements, while the ground floor features 20th-century tripartite sashes. The central doorway is set in a round arch double recess, with glazed and panelled double doors, a semi-circular fanlight with radiating glazing bars, and a large semi-circular canopy supported by acanthus console brackets. There are three round-headed dormers with casements on the roof, as well as similar dormers at the rear that also have glazing bars. The rear includes various 20th-century casements and a small outshut on the left. The side elevations are three bays wide and feature blind windows.

Inside, some original joinery remains, including fielded panel doors and a staircase located at the back of the hall. This staircase has an open string, stick balusters, and a moulded handrail that is wreathed over the curtail.

The Saracen's Head is believed to have been built as an inn for visitors to Wolterton Hall.
