Description
This is a barn located immediately southwest of Church Farmhouse, likely built in the 17th century and partly rebuilt and extended in the 18th century. It features a timber frame with brick infilling, and parts are rendered. The roof is made of red clay pantiles with gabled ends.
The barn has a rectangular plan with five bays and opposed cart entrances leading to a central threshing bay. In the 18th century, most of the barn was rebuilt in brick, except for the second bay from the east end. The original roof was replaced, and outshuts were added at the rear north and at the front of the east end.
On the south front, there are large double doors made of planks at the center. The bay to the right has an exposed timber frame with brick infill, and to the right of that, the main roof extends down as a catslide over a brick outshut. At the rear, the roof similarly extends down over brick outshuts.
Inside, the bay to the east of the center has timber frame front and back walls with exposed straight tension braces, studding, jowled storey posts, and plaster infill. The roof features tie-beams with curved braces, and the 18th-century roof above includes collars, one with queen-posts, and principals with tenoned purlins.
This barn is a rare surviving example of a timber-framed barn in North Norfolk.
