Description
The Church of St Margaret is a former parish church now in ruins, dating from the medieval period. It is constructed of knapped flint with brick and stone dressings, and features an iron-bound conglomerate. The church has a round tower, and in some areas, the knapped flints have fallen off, exposing the coursed flint beneath. The west window retains remnants of stone reveals beneath a two-centred arch, with alternate brick and flint voussoirs, and an opening above this with brick reveals and a four-centred arch. The tower has a polygonal stage with stone angles and an opening to the west, and it is topped with battlements featuring flushwork. There are remains of a brick stair on the south side. The tall, narrow archway on the east face includes some conglomerate quoins and a brick head. The nave gable remains mostly intact, primarily composed of conglomerate. Inside, there is a niche located under the west window. The church is also designated as a scheduled ancient monument.
