Description
Dairy Cottages is a cottage that likely dates from the 17th century or early 18th century, with later alterations from the 18th and 19th centuries, as well as a 19th-century extension. It is constructed of flint and brick, featuring brick quoins, a south gable end header, and a garden wall bond brick, while the south end of the west front has been rebuilt in Flemish bond brick. The roof is made of red clay pantiles with coped gable ends, and the south end has brick tumbling. There is a gable end stack with a rebuilt shaft.
The cottage has a two-room plan with a central entrance, where the left (north) room is heated by the gable end stack. A 19th-century outshut has been added to the north end. The building is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical two-window west front, featuring small 19th-century two-light casements and a large three-light casement on the left side of the ground floor. The central doorway has a plank door. On the left (north) gable end, there is a single-storey outshut built in Flemish bond brick with a pantile lean-to roof and a 19th-century three-light casement on the front; there is a blocked window above in the gable and on the first floor at the rear. The south gable end has 19th-century two and three-light casements.
Inside, the fireplace in the north gable end has a timber lintel and a lateral beam above against the stack. The rest of the interior has not been inspected. This building is shown on the 1732 estate map and, along with No. 4 Dairy Cottages, is all that remains of the village that survived the landscaping of Wolterton Park.
