Description
The Church of St. Mary is a parish church that dates back to the medieval period. It is constructed of flint and ironbound conglomerate, with dressings made of Lincolnshire limestone and brick, and has a slate roof. The church features a nave, a north aisle, a south porch, and a chancel.
The west wall includes a wooden bell-cote added in 1906, as the original tower fell in the 18th century, with only traces of its base remaining. The nave is buttressed and consists of three bays, with two two-light 19th-century cusped windows on the south side set in a rubble and conglomerate wall. The conglomerate quoins from the earlier church can be seen in the third bay. The north aisle wall was largely rebuilt in 1847, featuring brick-dressed buttresses and two two-light 19th-century windows. The chancel has a priests' door on the south side, angle buttresses, and a two-light 19th-century window, along with a three-light Perpendicular window in the east wall. The south porch, made of knapped flint, is located at the first bay of the nave and has a doorway with attached shafts and hollows. The nave doorway is topped with a hood mould and features a rib-vaulted niche above with a canopy.
Inside, the low north arcade was created by cutting through an earlier wall. The church has 19th-century roofs and a 19th-century chancel arch. There is a rood stair located over the eastern nave pier, a piscina, and an octagonal font. The church is listed as Grade II* due to the preservation of its early church plan.
