Description

The barns at Town Farm, located along the roadside in Thornage, date from the 18th century and consist of a range of two barns and stables. The barn to the north-east is constructed of coursed flint with brick dressings and has a pantile roof. It features five bays, with central openings and an extended porch leading to the yard. The structure includes square honeycombed vents, a wide brick-capped flint plinth, and a dentil cornice. The north-east gable showcases patterned brickwork in the shape of hearts. The roof is supported by two tiers of purlins, collars, and arched tie beams, with some common rafters having been renewed.

Attached to the south-west is another barn made of coursed flint, covered with corrugated tiles, which also has patterned brickwork on its south-west gable. Both barns have a continuous outshut on the south-east side facing the yard. The road front features flint courses alternating with courses of two flints and one brick header. There is one door leading to the road, topped by an unglazed light with close vertical bars. The south-west gable is built in header bond, while the south-east front to the left is in English bond brickwork below and header bond above, with the right side displaying a coursed brick and flint mosaic that is pierced by doors.
